What is Hearing Loss?
Hearing loss is a condition that affects a person’s ability to detect or interpret sound, ranging from mild difficulty in hearing certain tones to complete deafness. It can impact anyone - and 1 in 6 Australians suffer from it. People with hearing loss may face challenges in communication, education, and social interaction, which can influence their emotional wellbeing and overall quality of life.
There are several causes of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural and mixed. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound cannot efficiently travel through the outer or middle ear, often due to ear infections, wax buildup, or damage to the eardrum. Sensorineural hearing loss results from damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve, commonly linked to aging, prolonged noise exposure, certain medications, or genetic factors. In some cases, hearing loss develops gradually over time, while in others it occurs suddenly due to injury or illness. Understanding these causes is essential for early diagnosis, effective treatment, and prevention.
